Winter is super beautiful and even though she is scarred and crazy the people love her so much. I was “YEAH, viva la resistance” right there with the characters in the book. She also pulled me into Cinder’s journey to find her people to unite them into an army to fight for her and join her revolution. Meyer got me with all the cute couple moments, I totally live for those in stories like these (quotes in spoiler section), and I was enjoying Winter who is a little on the cray-cray side of life. Actually the first half of the book I couldn’t put it down at all. The thing is that it isn’t that this book was awful, I really enjoyed about 75-80% of it and fangirl squeed for at least 20-30%. Unlike in macho tales of grit and glory, Singelin infuses his story and characters with deep, simmering warmth. The spiraling city and vibrant colors give the world a surreal, out-of-time quality, like a violent dream. Singelin’s lush watercolors bring rich, tropical texture to the infinitely detailed, Tokyo-inspired cityscape. Returning from a jungle war homeless, friendless, and deeply scarred, Jun’s new battlegrounds are the neon-lit alleyways where the decorated crack shot is reduced to stealing drugs that dull her nightmarish flashbacks. Huddled in the empty, rain-soaked street under the awning of a noodle shop, pink-haired ex-sniper Jun lets out a groan: “I just want some peace.” After a lifetime spent at war, peace is far from possible for the abandoned army of veterans who haunt French-Laotian artist Singelin’s grim urban landscape.
